Oily Hair...Eek!

So you have oily hair and your bangs stick to your forehead? We've all seen it before and frankly, it's a sick cycle that oily hair causes for most people. Here's how it happens:

1. Oily hair
2. Wash it everyday and scrub really hard to get rid of the oil
3. Your scalp gets over dried because you're over washing
4. Your scalp produces more oil to compensate for the over washing
5. Oily hair again

Here's how to end it:

Start washing your hair every other day and use a shampoo like SACHAJUAN Scalp Shampoo or Bumble and Bumble Seaweed Shampoo to get your scalp's natural oils back on track. Yes, your hair will be oily for a week or so, but if you keep it up your scalp will train itself to produce normal amounts of oil. I suggest always using these shampoos or a pH-balancing shampoo (I hear this one's good too) and never putting conditioner near your scalp if you know you're prone to oiliness.

If you're interested, here's how to properly wash your hair.

i need to do this with my bangs! i wash my hair every 2-3 days, but my bangs i do daily because they get so oily. i need to just get over that week of grossness and catch them up to the rest of my hair! :)

Question: How does one wash every other day during the summertime with the super hot temps and/or when you work out to a sweat frequently throughout the week? I'd really like to do this, but those are my major roadblocks. Would it be possible to take a tepid shower but not wash the hair? Thank you for the lovely blog! I love it so so much!

Just rinsing your hair after working out or in the summertime is a good way to avoid over washing. I do it all the time! Thank you for your sweet words on the blog!

Your blog is my go-to resource for all things hair! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. One question: I had saved this post of yours regarding the best shampoo to use if you have to wash daily:

Would you still recommend someone like me (fine hair, greasy roots, low maintenance style, bangs, exercises daily) using something like Paul Mitchell Shampoo One every day vs. something like BB Seaweed daily?? I will do my best to not wash as much as I can (and am a dry shampoo addict: Rene Furterer and Fekkai Au Naturel are my current faves) but don't want to gross the world out! thanks, Lis

I've been perfecting my "dry wash" over about 10 years which has helped me from everyday wash to skipping 2 and three days! Good brushing makes a difference but, i never go anywhere without my johnson baby powder (cornstarch only! talcum powder is actually carcinogenic) lavender and aloe scented. I sprinkle a bit at the roots and brush out. This is the least expensive method.
